Genotype VII.1.1 of the Newcastle virus is penetrating vaccinated flocks and breaking down immunological barriers previously considered robust. Brussels, Berlin, Warsaw and Valencia are committed to compulsory vaccination, yet outbreaks continue to emerge. Are we witnessing the beginning of a health crisis that has gone largely unnoticed in the shadow of HPAI?
