Ten old laying hen houses demolished to make way for new egg products plant

Agotzaina drives modernisation of its Aranda plant: demolition of old houses and production expansion

The Navarrese company Agotzaina, S.L. has launched an ambitious renovation and growth plan at its facilities in Aranda de Duero. After acquiring in October 2023 the egg products plant that belonged to the Pascual group, the company is now planning a significant transformation of the site located at kilometre 156 of the N-I road in Aranda de Duero. This project not only seeks to optimise the available space, but also to consolidate its production capacity in the pasteurised liquid egg sector.

The end of an era: demolition of historic caged laying hen houses

One of the critical phases of this project is the demolition of ten old caged laying hen farm buildings that are currently disused. These structures, more than 40 years old, occupy space needed for industrial expansion.

The demolition works will be carried out by mechanical collapse demolition, given the isolated nature of the buildings. A fundamental aspect of this phase is environmental safety: several of the roof structures contain asbestos (fibre cement), requiring a specific plan for selective and controlled removal in accordance with current regulations. To minimise the impact on the surrounding area, the company will implement dust, noise and vibration control measures, in addition to carrying out differentiated waste management to maximise recycling. The investment earmarked for these demolition works alone amounts to just over โ‚ฌ200,000, with an estimated execution period of five months.
The BOCyL published on Friday, 26 December 2025 the information relating to the application for exceptional use authorisation on rural land and a planning licence, opening a 20-day period for possible objections. The project, drawn up by Terracota Ingenieros S.L.U., provides for the demolition of structures more than 40 years old, formerly used for poultry farming and currently inactive, in order to free up space for the expansion of the production facilities.

The land freed up by the old hen houses will be used to expand the adjacent egg products plant

Once the land has been cleared, Agotzaina will proceed with the construction of a new industrial building adjoining the existing factory. This structure will have a floor area of 156.28 square metres at ground level and will be designed to house three specialised tanks for the separation of albumen and yolk.

The main objective of this new infrastructure is to optimise the internal process and improve the efficiency of the plant, which currently already exceeds an annual production of 14 million litres of various egg-derived ingredients. According to municipal sources, the total investment for the demolition and expansion works combined will exceed โ‚ฌ340,000, with an overall works schedule that could extend to nine months.

Agotzaina thus expands its egg production destined for egg products and improves biosecurity by geographically distancing its laying hen farms from the Liquid Egg Plant.

The plant currently has a workforce of approximately 40 employees, who were fully transferred following the agreement between Agotzaina and Pascual in 2023. Although the expansion will entail a greater workload due to the introduction of a new production line, the company has not yet confirmed whether this will result in the immediate creation of new jobs in the short term.

From a regulatory standpoint, the Councillor for Public Works in Aranda de Duero, Ana Marรญa Hervรกs, has clarified that this file is being processed as a non-substantial modification of a pre-existing industrial facility that has been operating for decades. The process is currently in the public consultation phase for the granting of the planning licence and the exceptional use authorisation on rural land. Hervรกs emphasised that the factory already holds a valid environmental authorisation with active controls in place, and that this therefore does not constitute the opening of a new industrial facility.

With this move, Agotzaina strengthens its presence in Castilla y Leรณn, maintaining the legacy of Pascual’s egg products brand while steering it towards greater technological and operational efficiency.

Agotzaina targets โ‚ฌ800 million in sales in 2025 following its acquisition spree

Agotzaina, the Navarre-based agri-food giant, surpassed the โ‚ฌ700 million revenue threshold in 2024, representing a 14% increase on 2023. The company closed 2024 with record sales and is targeting double-digit growth (10%) in 2025, which would bring it to the โ‚ฌ800 million mark. The company, led and chaired by Cristina Viader, achieved a pre-tax net result never previously seen: โ‚ฌ32.3 million, up 73.6% on 2023.

The family-owned company, with a minority stake held by Calidad Pascual (3.5%), achieved this result during the 2023โ€“2025 period in which it carried out several acquisitions, consolidating its position as one of the most active companies in M&A within the industry, according to accounts filed with the Mercado Alternativo de Renta Fija (MARF).

Thus, the group’s perimeter expanded to include a 50% stake in Explotaciones Garcรญa Puente SL, 100% of Ecolรณgica Martรญ SL and the acquisition of an additional 1% of Oufil Ovoproductes SL (Granja Coccรณ). The company also made opportunistic acquisitions, as demonstrated by its bid for the productive unit of the Granada-based company Nicopan, which entered insolvency proceedings in March 2024. The Navarrese group had previously acquired in Granada the company Avรญcola Garrido, in Escรบzar, at a time when it too was going through difficulties. At the start of 2023, it acquired the industrial premises, machinery and equipment of the insolvent GRANJA CRUSVI. Likewise in 2024, the Navarrese group Agotzaina, in alliance with the Madrid-based company Avรญcola Barco, acquired 100% of the shares in Explotaciones Avรญcolas Garcรญa Puente de Olmedo, one of Spain’s leading egg producers and a major supplier to one of the country’s largest retail chains.

The company, headquartered in Arbizu, aims to remain active in the market with new acquisitions, having brought 14 acquisitions within its perimeter between 2013 and 2023. Induovo (egg products), Avรญcola Figueras (chicken meat), El Quiteriano (Heras Bareche brand) and Panaderรญa Tuesta (industrial bakery) are among its purchases.

As reported by ElEconomista.es, Agotzaina, supported by the boutique advisory firm TAE Europa, which regularly advises it on acquisition mandates, has for several years relied on funding from Ibercaja and on alternative financing from the Basque investment fund Talde to support its expansion process. The integration of all these acquisitions has enabled it to triple its revenues and multiply its EBITDA fivefold since 2020. Originally focused on the poultry sector and pasteurised egg products, the company has over time expanded its business into the meat sector and fruit packaging.

Its acquisition policy has been analysed by the market. Ethifinance, the rating agency that assesses the company’s creditworthiness, has classified it as a “gazelle” company, noting in its latest report that Agotzaina ยซis exposed to integration risks that demand agile and experienced management, capable of rapidly aligning new acquisitions with the corporate strategy and culture in order to maximise synergies and avoid operational conflictsยป.
