Grupo Bailón to Invest €100 Million in a New Poultry Complex for More Than 2 Million Hens in Teruel

-. El Pobo (Teruel) to host one of the largest investments in the Spanish poultry sector, declared of regional interest by the Government of Aragon

-. The Aragonese company, currently Spain’s leading egg exporter, will begin construction in 2027 of a complex in El Pobo with capacity for 1.53 million laying hens in cage-free systems and 720,000 places for pullet rearing

Zaragoza, 4 February 2026. – The map of poultry farming in Spain is preparing for a significant shift in its productive infrastructure in the laying sector. Grupo Bailón, one of the sector’s leading operators and a benchmark in the export market, has received the green light from the Government of Aragon for its new strategic project: a poultry complex in the Teruel municipality of El Pobo that will mobilise an investment of €100.12 million.
The project, declared of regional interest by the Government of Aragon at an Extraordinary Council of Government held on Wednesday, 4 February 2026 in the city of Teruel, is positioned as one of the largest investments in the laying poultry sector in Spain in recent years.

The technical details of an unprecedented project

The new facilities will comprise two large plots differentiated by activity.
The first plot will be dedicated to laying hens, where eight barn housing houses will be built with capacity for 1,471,392 birds. In addition, two free-range hen houses will be constructed to accommodate a total of 66,115 animals.
The second plot will be used for pullet rearing, with four houses providing a total capacity of 720,000 pullet rearing places. The complex will be completed by an egg grading and packing centre, as well as offices, changing rooms and restrooms for staff.

The future complex will be designed as a large-scale operation divided into two functional plots, covering the complete laying and grading cycle:

  1. Production unit: This will house the bulk of the capacity with eight barn housing houses (floor system), with capacity for 1,471,392 birds, in line with the market trend towards cage-free systems. In addition, two houses will be built for free-range hens, with 66,115 places.
  2. Pullet rearing unit: To ensure traceability and quality from the source, four houses dedicated to pullet rearing will be built with a simultaneous capacity of 720,000 places.
  3. Logistics and processing: The facilities will be completed with an on-site egg grading and packing centre, offices and staff amenities.

Construction is estimated to begin in 2027 and be completed in December 2031. The operational phase will generate between 60 and 80 direct skilled jobs (veterinarians, technicians, logistics staff) and around one hundred indirect jobs.

Job creation and rural development

During the construction phase, which is expected to begin in 2027 and conclude in December 2031, 20 direct jobs will be created in civil works and industrial assembly.
This was outlined by the Vice-President and Minister for Economy of the DGA, Mar Vaquero, at the press conference on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, following an extraordinary Council of Government held in Teruel at which the project was declared of regional interest.

Once the complex is operational, the creation of between 60 and 80 stable jobs is estimated, including technical staff, poultry farmers, operatives, logistics, administration and veterinary personnel. In addition, up to 100 indirect jobs associated with the activity are expected to be generated.

Grupo Bailón: export leader with a European vocation

Granja Bailón, the group’s parent company headquartered in La Almunia de Doña Godina (Zaragoza), has more than 50 years of experience in egg production. The company ranks among the ten largest egg producers in Spain, with 58 million dozens marketed in 2024, and is the second company in the sector by turnover, with €164.85 million in 2024.

The company stands out in particular for its export orientation: Granja Bailón is Spain’s leading egg exporter, directing approximately 80% of its production to the European market. At the close of 2024, Granja Bailón sold eggs in Europe worth more than €70 million, almost double the figure from the previous year. Granja Bailón has a shareholding from the emerging poultry company Agotzaina.

Structure of Grupo Bailón

The Aragonese business holding is made up of several complementary companies: in addition to Granja Bailón, the group includes CCN Piensos (poultry feed), Friocargo Herbatra (transport), Labrantia (cereal cultivation), as well as Explotaciones Avícolas El Romeral and Eurodistribuciones for the production and marketing of eggs abroad.

The company guarantees delivery of its eggs to any point in Europe within a maximum of 24 hours.

Administrative streamlining

The declaration of investment of regional interest will allow administrative timescales to be halved, without exempting the project from compliance with current regulations. This measure reinforces the commitment that the Government of Aragon has been making for years to attract flagship projects (Grupo Costa, Bon Area, etc.) that generate wealth, employment and territorial cohesion in rural areas.
